Escher Discord Server

The Discord Server is a great place to ask for advice from House members, be informed about events put on by other residents, and talk about anything you want. It's also a place where members sometimes discuss House matters such as proposals.

Current invite link: https://discord.gg/vjc9JmJpXt. It is limited to 100 invites because it is exposed to the internet. Ask the [Tech Team] or [House President] to replace the link if it becomes invalid.

Roles

The following are primary roles, or roles that affect your access across the server. These are mod-assigned and the application for them is in #verify-and-get-role-ing. For more on why they are mod-assigned, see the section on security below.

Escherite: If you are currently living at Escher, you will be assigned this role that grants access to all public channels. - Note: Currently living at Escher means literally that. For example, if you are home for the summer and coming back in the Fall, you should have the Alumni role for the summer and can easily reapply for the Escherite role in the Fall. - Note 2: All Escherites will be assigned a respective suite-specific role that grants access to their suite's private channel. Escheritus: If you have lived at Escher but are not previously, you will be assigned this role that grants access to several channels that let you stay in touch with the community. Prospective Member: If you have never lived at Escher, you will be assigned this role that grants access to a Q&A channel and a link to the wiki.

More specific, non-primary roles include the following: - House Officer - Maintenance Team - Suite Manager - House Council - Interim Manager - [suite-name-here] (to denote membership in a suite) These are mod-assigned to ensure only the correct people hold them at any given time. Some of these roles have private channels. For example, all officers have a private channel and each suite has a private channel. If you believe you are missing one of these roles, DM a moderator.

The following roles are optional, do not affect your server access, and can be found in #self-assign-roles: - Pronouns

Security

The main justification of the landing page & primary role assignments is security. Many of you will know that our email mailing list also reflects current membership. Given the passing of the February '23 Discord Proposal, the content of these emails will also be shared in this Discord. For the same This is for the safety and privacy of everyone. Because many email announcements and attachments are sensitive, the access to channels that possess that content must be restricted to current members for the same reason the mailing list is.

Extra notes: - The purpose of the newly (as of May '23, anyway) private suite channels is to make space for the private discussion of suite-specific concerns. You can still tag all members of a suite in messages in other channels by using the @[suite-name-here] tag. - The secondary purpose of the "new" Escherite role is to create communication spaces for housemates with only their fellow housemates. The Discord proposal of February '23 gives way for the facilitation of such spaces while maintaining a warm welcome to the server's growing alumni presence.

Forever Optional

The House Discord server will remain forever optional, with all fundamental House communication going through email. This clause was passed in the February '23 Discord proposal.
