Residents of Escher can of course send and receive mail. Unlike an apartment building, Escher has just one mailbox per suite rather than one for every than individual unit. It is therefore up to us to sort mail within each suite.

Mail sorting system
Most mail sorting is done at the suite level, as each suite has its own address and mailbox. One member per suite will be assigned mail sorting as their suite chore. This member must regularly sort mail from the outside mailbox into the individual cubbies just inside the front door. Mail cubby labels make this task straightforward by connecting names to room numbers. Any junk mail not addressed to a current member is recycled. Finally, any mail addressed to people who do not live in the suite is dropped into the suite's "unsorted mail" box.
Escher's office staff handles mail sorting at the house level. They are tasked with regularly bringing each suite's unsorted mail box down to the office for sorting. With the help of the official house roster, they determine whether each piece of mail belongs to a current or former Escherite. If the mail belongs to a current member (who perhaps switched suites), it is taken to their current room number. If it belongs to a past resident who has asked for their mail to be held, it is held at the office. All other mail is either returned to sender (first-class mail) or recycled (all other mail).
Please see Escher's mail standing rule for details.
If you are missing mail or a package
The system described above only works if suite-level and house-level mail sorters are conscientious and timely. A few things can go wrong. A sorter may misread a name or room number (or the name may be incorrect on the mail itself), preventing them from finding the member when searching through the roster. Mail sorting can also get backed up. At the suite level, the Suite Manager must ensure that mail is being sorted. In the office, it's up to the Secretary to ensure that mail is sorted regularly. At the beginning of each term, when suite chores and office staffing have not been set up yet, mail sorting backups are common.
All that said, here's what to do if you are missing a package:
- Send an email to escher.office@icc.coop to let the office staff know
- CC the house Secretary (escher.secretary@icc.coop)
- Optionally, email the house or utilize the Escher Discord Server to ask if anyone has seen your mail/package (especially if office staff tell you they have not seen it)
