The Mound is at the center of the courtyard, with several picnic tables surrounding the fire pit where we have bonfires. It gains its mound shape because it houses the Escher cooperative house underneath. Some believe Escher is an abandoned bomb shelter from the cold war, others believe the basement is simply unfinished, and they covered it up with a mound of dirt.
Legend has it that the very first Escher president, Arthur Guffman, died during construction of Escher, and is buried in his room, G11. It is said that you can still hear him playing his lute if you quietly sit on top of the mound late at night.
