LBGTQ Workshop

This workshop covered the basics of what LBGTQ represents, and what sex, gender, and sexual orientation all actually mean.

What does LBGTQ stand for?

  • Lesbian
  • Gay
  • Bisexual
  • Transgender
  • Queer/Questioning

Sex

A classification based on reproductive biology. Assigned at birth most often based on the appearance of an infant's genitalia. Termed as female, male, or intersex.

Gender

One's internal sense of self; not inherently connected to physical anatomy. One's gender identity can be the same or different than the sex assigned at birth. Often broken down into Gender Identity and Gender Expression.

    • Gender Identity**: Woman, man, transgender, genderqueer, cisgender, etc.
    • Gender Expression**: Feminine, masculine, androgynous.

Sexual Orientation

A person's emotional, physical and sexual attraction and the expression of that attraction with other individuals. Termed as bisexual, same-gender loving, lesbian, gay, fluid, queer, straight, etc.

Definitions

Cisgender- Someone who, for the most part, identifies with the gender which they were assigned at birth.

Transgender- Someone who identifies with or expresses a different gender identity than the one which correspond's to their sex at birth.

Androgynous- Having both male and female characteristics.
