Orientation addresses many frequently asked questions, but may leave other important questions unanswered. If you're new to Escher, you may be wondering...

What are all my responsibilities exactly? Am I about to get in trouble for not doing something I didn't even know I was supposed to do?

See the New Member Information page for a list of member responsibilities.

I was fined by an officer, and I think the fine is unfair. How do I appeal it?

Email the President with a statement explaining why you think the fine is unfair. The President will call for a Judiciary Committee meeting, where you and the officer involved are encouraged to explain and answer questions in person. In clear-cut cases (for example, a car accident or sudden illness preventing a member from reaching their kitchen shift on time), the vote is effectively just a formality.

My room door/smoke detector/suite kitchen sink/etc. is broken -- how do I get help?

Submit the RFA form, and a member of the maintenance team will respond and address the issue.

The internet is spotty in my suite. What do I do?

Submit the tech RFA form, and a member of the tech team will respond and address the issue.

Can I really change anything I want here by asking the house to vote?

A fairly minimal set of house rules is set forth in the constitution. It is fairly difficult to amend the constitution, but it is certainly possible provided a clear majority of the house feels strongly in favor of the change. Most day-to-day operations at Escher are governed by standing rules, which are voted on at house meetings. Any member may propose a standing rule, and a simple majority is sufficient to enact it.

Some changes are more about purchasing things than making rules. If you would like for the house to purchase a non-consumable thing that everyone can use (e.g. a projector, a video game console, plants), put together your best estimate of the cost and bring this proposal to the house. The house may vote to use the Amenities Fund to make the purchase you request.

What am I allowed to take from the suite kitchen?

Feel free to use the pots and pans in your own suite kitchen. You may even borrow pots and pans from other suite kitchens, provided you return them. Most consumable items in suite kitchens and refrigerators belong to a particular member. If a member's name is on an item, or the item is in a bin or on a shelf with a member's name, do not use it.

What am I allowed to take from the main kitchens?

Members are allowed to use reasonable quantities of some items that Chef Lynn stores in the O'Keeffe kitchen pantry. Taking a cup or two of sugar is fine. Any food in the walk-in refrigerator is probably required for an upcoming dinner, so do not take things from there. When in doubt, ask Chef Lynn or the Kitchen Manager.

Why do the meals have processed food?

Chef Lynn has a great deal of experience with cooking large quantities of food. She does her best in conjunction with the Student Buyers Association to obtain fresh and local ingredients within the constraints of the house budget and often unskilled kitchen workers. If there is a specific ingredient you would like more or less of, feel free to ask her either in person or by writing on the chalkboard near the door to the industrial kitchen area.

Why do we have four different milk alternatives?

Why do we have whole milk and chocolate milk rather than, say, skim?

Escher has made multiple changes to the kinds of milk we put in the milk dispensers. The house voted to replace 2% with whole, and to remove skim. More members preferred whole milk, and some skim milk drinkers were okay with making their own skim milk using whole.

Why do so many of the vegetarian meals contain soy?

Soy is often used in vegetarian meals because it's a complete protein that's widely tolerated, sometimes celebrated, and often inexpensive. For some people, going and staying vegetarian can test one's willpower. We do our best to support our members by occasionally offering meals containing soy-based "meat substitutes" meant to help bring back a bit of comfort and ease any transition one may be trying to make from meat to vegetables.
